11 Questions You Need to Answer Before Becoming a Product School Student

Demand for Product Managers keeps growing. But how can you satisfy the needs of the industry and become a product manager yourself? Read and find out if product management is for you!

Product Managers have one of the coolest jobs in tech.

Actually, think again. They have one of the coolest jobs in the universe. Product management is responsible for envisioning, planning, implementing and deploying features and products. It’s a role that combines technical savviness, business acumen, strategic vision, and design chops.

It’s no surprise that the demand for this type of profession is growing. But how can you satisfy the needs of the industry and become a product manager yourself?

Check out this article and make your first decisive step in your PM career!

1. Is product management for me?

Our students are professionals of all kinds. Forget about the “tech wizard” stereotype. Plenty of our alumni have the widest of backgrounds, coming from adjacent disciplines like developer, engineer or project manager to even finance, consulting or beyond. This is because the product management role can be very different across organizations: all backgrounds are welcome and it means you can bring a unique perspective to the role.

As our alumni, Peter says on this video, “there’s a stereotype out there thinking that “Oh, only engineers can become product managers”. He, along with many of our other alumni, is living proof that that’s not the case.

2. Where can I learn product management?

Due to the constant transformation of the digital scene, some people question if product management is a discipline that can be taught. Traditional business schools and universities are not prepared to offer the dynamic experience that can define you as an aspiring product manager.

The closest thing to a structured product management degree or programme is Product School’s Product Management Course. The course is an 8-week part-time program for professionals with strong technical or business backgrounds who want to transition into product management roles at software-based companies.

3. What is the product management course content like?

The product manager course is neatly divided into topical sections that cover all you need to know to build your career foundations.

For starters, the course answers the big questions, like ‘what is product management experience’, or ‘what is a good product management framework’. There are many good answers. In fact, our handpicked experts offer their own definitions of product management. This is because their insights are based on their particular journeys as PMs.

Throughout the 8 weeks, you will tackle product management with examples. Beginning with the assessment of target opportunities and customers, followed by defining, designing, building and launching your product; the program will make you a full-spectrum product professional.

4. What are the product management instructors’ backgrounds?

The first thing you’ll notice is that the instructor is a professional with a firm knowledge of the field.

Our alumni often point out that the real-life challenges that instructors bring into the classroom generate some of the most interesting conversations.

5. Will there be any practical product management exercises?

Over the 8 weeks, you will become increasingly attached to a project and bring it to fruition. On one particular day, you might focus on essential PM skills, such as A/B Testing.

Rather than this being a one-way street, your instructor will engage the class with practical challenges. This is where you will benefit the most from the small class sizes and background of other students.

6. Will there be feedback on my progress as a product manager?

Feedback sessions and conversations will enlighten and fortify your product knowledge. Of course, there are plenty of relevant product management tools which you will learn about and start using straight away.

Think of the many iterations and prototypes you need to build before reaching that perfect stage. And, as it happens with digital products, be prepared to repeat this process every so often! Thankfully, the class environment is the perfect moment to test, try and test again without fear of causing any major damage.

In fact, listen to our alumni Depali on our video below. Attending a class at Product School it’s not just about listening to a lecture. You’re up there and you’re being put on the spot. Because that’s the only way to learn how to become a product manager.

7. Is the product manager course tailored to a specific size or type of organization?

The focus of the course is not limited to product management for startups. As you reach the final stages, refining your marketing approach and public speaking skills, you will also learn how to apply different frameworks depending on organization size.

8. What does the final product management test look like?

The final test before you get your certification is the Final Presentation. While you should be more than ready to face it, don’t turn off after you’re done! Your classmates and instructor will dissect your product demo and provide you your first official feedback as Product Manager.

Congratulations!
